"Reached out" in business speak, as in "I reached out to Accounting..." Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
I also hate the word "utilize"--it's a totally pointless word. Lately I'm having a fight with a reviewer who keeps trying to insert "utilize" into my documents everywhere I have put the word "use." She says it sounds "more technical." I think it sounds poncey and stupid. I'm okay with editorial contributions if they add something, but we may come to blows over this.
A stoop is different from a porch. In inner-city Baltimore or Philadelphia, there aren't many porches, but there are lots of stoops.
Now if you're talking about using "stoop" to refer to a porch because it sounds more "urban" or "quaint," then I agree, that's ridiculous.
Agree with the last poster that "reach out" is an abomination. It seems to be one of the corporate phrases that people for God knows what reason feel is okay to use outside the office. It ruined the great Four Tops song for me, too.
Non-standard grammar tends to irritate me more than specific words:
I would of
It were sunny
You was there
UGHHHHH!!!
