Interesting, I always pictured/remembered an Edward G. Robinson-type character mumbling around a cee-gar in an old smokey drunk poker game. I thought it meant 'cheater'. Then a huge fight would explode.
When I was a kid in the Forties and Fifties a "piker" was someone who made small bets in gambling, and by extension someone without much daring or gumption.
