Where did the word ornery come from?
ornery (adj.)
1816, ornary, American English dialectal contraction of ordinary (adj.). " Commonplace," hence "of poor quality, coarse, ugly." By c. 1860 the sense had evolved to "mean, cantankerous." Related: Orneriness.
