This may have been touched on before, I haven't read the entire thread, but it drives me nuts when "into" is used instead of "in to". In our local newspaper I've seen "He was turned into the police" or "They turned into the driveway" more times than I care to count.

I would agree with your first example, but not the second. Into can also mean
"used as a function word to indicate entry, introduction, insertion, superposition, or inclusion <came into the house> <enter into an alliance>"
