I actually use this word not infrequently and you are correct, first recorded use was 1736.

Rigmarole - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

One synonym of rigmarole is bafflegab. This is my new favourite word!

This may have been touched on before, I haven't read the entire thread, but it drives me nuts when "into" is used instead of "in to". In our local newspaper I've seen "He was turned into the police" or "They turned into the driveway" more times than I care to count.

Makes me crazy!

I would agree with your first example, but not the second. Into can also mean


"used as a function word to indicate entry, introduction, insertion, superposition, or inclusion <came into the house> <enter into an alliance>"
