Many of these expressions can be attributed to the past, when things were very much different!
Here is the American Heritage Dictionary's take:

pat 1 (pt)

n.
1. A light gentle stroke or tap.
2. The sound made by a light stroke or tap or by light footsteps.
3. A small mass shaped by or as if by patting: a pat of butter.

I pondered the preposterous proposal of punctiliously picking a peck of perfect pats.

This is what I get for entering the Relationships forum:

Given the context, I'm assuming the poster meant "touché", instead of adding needless letters to a slang term for derriere.

I've never heard or seen anyone say or write "pad" of butter.

I have some old butter pats. They are little squarish ceramic dishes made to hold individual bits of butter and they were used back in the days when dinners were more formal. Each person had a butter pat placed near his plate instead of having a communal butter dish. I have also heard of those little paper squares with a piece of butter on them referred to as butter pats. I've never heard or seen anyone say "PAD" of butter either.

Every time that Shop-Rite (the largest grocery chain in NJ and a few other states) advertises a price reduction on Reynolds aluminum foil, it is advertised as, "Reynold's", foil.
I tried e-mailing the powers-that-be at their corporate headquarters in order to make them aware of this gaffe, but I did not receive a response.
More than likely, they are still scratching their heads in puzzlement.

From the Parenting forum:

Punishment doesn't seem to phase this kid

What phase is she in, I wonder?
