While "if you were I" is technically correct, I think most would use "me" in colloquial speech since "I" may sound a bit stilted.

Now, SQ, when someone asks for you by name on the phone, do you say, "this is her" or "this is she"?

This reminds me of the story about the grade school boy who was staying home from school....

The school called the house to verify his absence and the boy answered the phone. The school official asked who was speaking and he replied "This is my mommy."

I'm reminded of how often someone who didn't catch my name says, "What was your name again?" or, "What did you say your name was?"

Sometimes, I smile and say, "It still is...." and I repeat it for them.

My preferred modus operandi is to avoid such a situation by dodging laterally with something like, "This is Suzy Q. How may I help you?"

From the NJ Forum:

Oh comeon! Do you really expect Chine(se) to win that competition!

Three errors in the space of just 12 words is...impressive...

I wonder what this person might say regarding the "Fren(ch)", or the "Japane(se)", or even the, "Canadia(ns)".

Sometimes these things are just sad.

Found on a CD thread, someone wanting to live a life "full of peace and property". No mention of real estate....

:/

OH and on a FB post: "and who turned them in? <----- yours sincerely" (I wanted SO much to say - maybe you meant yours TRULY?) gah!

Everything I see brings me to this thread!

I wouldn't mind a life full of peace and property (as long as the latter wasn't a real headache).

Per my 8th grade English teacher, the correct response is: This is she/he.

Or to play it safe just say: speaking.
