Not a trick question, trust me, just want to be correct on my Christmas card.

Nope, not true. English does not require an "article of ownership" with the possessive "'s." We went to the Baker's <house>. I'm going to the butcher's <shop>.

Look at how possessive pronouns are used - nouns can be used in the same way.

I still feel as if I am left dangling when the modified word is left out. Are you going to the Baker home? Their office? Their Christmas party? Should it be the Bakers' ? The Bakers's?

Why not just say you are going to the butcher?

In that case I would say it's an incomplete sentence since it fails to complete the thought or completely communicate what is to be understood.

That may be so, but it's still grammatically correct. However, you are right, it's the Bakers' house . "I'm going to the Bakers' house to see John Baker's photo."

It's just one of those rules of the English language that differs from some of the other languages.

Possessive pronouns are another example of the same thing.

It may technically be correct, as far as the rules of the language go, but it would be a giant FAIL when it comes to effective communication.

A number of family businesses went through a series of names as they reincorporated next generations linto the DBA names. They had to keep the apostrphes moving around as the identity of the owners changed.

Wilson Brothers' (Two Wilson brothers)
Wilson's (one brother died)
Wilson and Son's (one son in the partnership)
Wilson and Sons' (both sons in the partnership)

Any of the following are correct:

How did Jerry beat us to the printer?
How did Jerry beat us to the printer's?
How did Jerry beat us to the printers'?
How did Jerry beat us to the printers?

1) How did he beat us to that guy?
2) How did he beat us to that guy's place?
3) How did he beat us to those guys' place?
4) How did he beat us to those guys?

1 and 4 are implying that Jerry was on his way to meet either one printer or more than one printer, at no specified or implied location. - So he was going to meet people, as a priority.
2 and 3 imply that Jerry was on his way to the location where he would find either a printer, or more than one printer. So in this the priority was to get to a specific location, and not necessarily to meet anyone at all.

My nephew saw a restaurant sign near Pittsburgh which read: We spik english and we delivery.

English was spelled correctly.
