Description: Located in the hilly country of south central Kentucky, this is the world’s longest known cave system, with more than 367 miles explored. An early guide by the name of Stephen Bishop once called the cave a “grand, gloomy and peculiar place,” but numerous vast chambers and complex labyrinths have earned it the name of Mammoth Cave. Since 1816, visitors have toured its subterranean labyrinths. In addition to its famous caverns, Mammoth Cave National Park contains more than 70 miles of backcountry trails through forested hills for hikers, horseback riders, and bicyclists. In addition to the Web site maintained by the U.S. Parks Service, you can find a lot of useful information at www.mammothcave.com.
