Description: From Oct through Apr, the Woods Hole Folk Music Society stages concerts on the first and third Sundays of the month. The programs often attract nationally known performers such as Bill Staines, Peggy Seeger, Roy Bookbinder, Oscar Brand, David Mallett, Aoife Clancy, and Kim and Reggie Harris. Admission is $15, with discounts for members, seniors, and children.

Description: The award-winning Cape Symphony Orchestra performs classical, pops, and educational concerts at the Barnstable High School Performing Arts Center in Hyannis from Sept through early May. Two hugely successful outdoor summer pops concerts are performed at the Mashpee Commons at the end of July and at Eldredge Park in Orleans in mid-Aug. Music Director Royston Nash stepped down in 2008 but still conducts from time to time. The new director and artistic director of the Cape’s only symphonic orchestra, Jung-Ho Pak, also conducts the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, the World Symphony Orchestra, and the Summer Orchestras at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Description: Launched in 1980, the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival hold concerts in various venues for three weeks in August, with special events other times. The roster includes chamber music concerts, programs for young people, evenings of jazz, and the annual screening of a music-themed film. Concert tickets average $28 to $40, depending on when you purchase and what you are going to hear ($15 for college students, free for those 18 and under).

Description: Made up of faculty, students, and area residents, this innovative dance troupe focuses mainly on modern dance, though it has broadened its scope in recent years to include such traditional fare as ballroom dancing. The troupe usually stages three annual shows at the college’s Tilden Arts Center.

Description: Housed in the Tilden Arts Center of Cape Cod Community College, the Higgins Art Gallery features a variety of works. It is open to the public Mon through Fri, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with several special shows a year. Due to its school affiliation, the gallery closes from mid-Apr to Sept.

22. Tree’S Place

Description: The collection of paintings in the gallery space at Tree’s Place couldn’t have been better coordinated. Several rooms house pieces of art, many oversized, and all beautifully hung; the effect is a museum-like ambience. Featured artists include Sam Barber, Robert Vickrey, Robert Douglas Hunter, and Sam Vokey, among other artists. Tree’s Place presents weekly exhibitions throughout July and Aug, including exhibitions during the first few weeks of Sept. There is often an exhibition the week after Thanksgiving, featuring in-house artists and selected guests. Opening nights are usually Sat evenings from 5 to 7 p.m. Tree’s Place is open daily in summer, and suspends service on Sun in spring, fall, and winter.

Description: The Cape Museum of Fine Arts conveys the important role that Cape Cod and the islands have played in American art. Founded in 1981 by a group of artists, educators, and community activists, CMFA focuses on the works of artists who have been influenced by the Cape environment, its people, and the interactive exchange of artistic ideas. The museum houses a collection that ranges from the late 1800s to the modern era, with more than 800 works by such icons as Charles Hawthorne, Paul Resika, Martha Cahoon, and Chaim Gross. The museum sponsors frequent classes, trips, a fine-arts auction, and a film series. The museum is open year-round. Adult admission is $8; people younger than 18 enter free. Admission is by donation all day Thurs.

Description: Insiders know that the Cape Cinema, built in 1930, is the place for serious movie watching. The theater shows the finest in foreign, independent, and art films from Apr through early Jan.Getting there early will not only guarantee you a seat, but also give you time to bask in the building’s beauty. The exterior was designed in the style of the Congregational Church in Centerville, and the interior ceiling is covered with a 6,400-square-foot mural of heavenly skies designed by Rockwell Kent and executed by Jo Mielziner. (Kent also designed the stage’s golden sunburst curtain.) 

25. Wellfleet Cinemas

Description: Wellfleet Cinemas, built in 1986, is independently owned and operated. The cinemas have four screens equipped with Dolby Stereo and offer weekly first-run moves. The cinemas are open for matinees every day all summer long. The Wellfleet Cinemas is open 365 days a year. Next door to the indoor screens is the Wellfleet Drive-In, where the family can take in an old-school flick on the 100-foot-by-44-foot screen. Enjoy first-run double features almost every night. 

26. Falmouth Theatre Guild

Description: The Falmouth Theatre Guild puts on three or four shows a year at Highfield Theater. Favored as one of the best local theater companies, they eschew heavy dramas in favor of musicals, comedies, and other feel-good fare. During the summer the College Light Opera Company (www.collegelightopera.com) moves in and stages nine musicals, each running a week. The shows begin the last week of June and run through the last week of Aug. Expect some Gilbert and Sullivan and plenty of Broadway classics.
