Description: Recent renovations have further improved the offerings of Midtown Omaha’s University of Nebraska Medical Center, which in the late 1990s merged with what used to be Clarkson Hospital. The hospital is the teaching center for the University of Nebraska; current expansion projects include the Bellevue Medical Center, which opened in early 2010, and the Clinical Cancer Center, part of a west Omaha medical center.The Med Center is one of the most groundbreaking research hospitals in Omaha, and was the first in the Midwest to offer Intensity Modulated Therapy, which improves radiation targeting of cancerous tumors without harming nearby tissue. It’s also groundbreaking in terms of prostate cancer treatment using ultrasound technology. It runs a once-a-month clinic for diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other tumors. In 2009, the hospital opened a special wing and treatment program for patients who have epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dementia.Other Med Center facilities on the central Omaha campus include a clinical cancer center, a diabetes center, an outpatient center, the Lied Transplant Center, and the Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital.
