Description: The Omaha home where President Gerald R. Ford was born was one of the finest homes of its day. The 3-story, 14-room home was where Leslie King, Jr.—later known as Gerald Ford—was born on July 14, 1913. That home, demolished by fire in 1971, became a memorial site to the president after Ford became the leader of the United States in 1974. The birth site was dedicated in 1977 and the city planted a rose garden in 1978 to honor former First Lady Betty Ford.Today, the gardens are located adjacent to the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center, which specializes in the treatment and conservation of a variety of items: art, artifacts, archeological materials, books, photographs, paper, paintings, and textiles included. The gardens play host to an exhibit honoring the center’s namesake, and a second exhibit, inside the conservation center, is open by appointment. The gardens are open early morning until dusk every day year-round, and are a popular site for private rental events, including weddings.
