Description: Owned by the family that owns The Chalkboard, the Garlic Rose was named for one of its favorite offerings—a roasted garlic head served with homemade bread and a combination of olive oil and balsamic vinegar—which is complimentary at dinner. While the menu lists some non-Italian dishes, it would be a shame not to try the cannelloni of the day (lunch and dinner) or the ravioli of the day (dinner). The farfalle pasta in pesto cream sauce with red bell peppers, garlic, and spinach and topped with sautéed chicken, pine nuts, and goat cheese is a consistent customer request.The decor is definitely Italian, with crisp, white tablecloths, clay-colored stucco walls, wine bottles, grapes, and greenery. Full bar service is available.This place is tricky to find. Although the address is on South Peoria Avenue, the entrance to the little enclave of shops and restaurants where it’s located is on 35th St. There’s plenty of parking just east of these businesses. The Garlic Rose is open for lunch Tues through Sat and dinner Mon through Sat. It’s closed on Sun.Enjoy the same good menu at Garlic Rose II. The décor’s a little sleeker, the bar’s a bit bigger, and they have a private wine room. Hours and days are the same, although there is a chance they may add a Sunday brunch.
