Description: Tulsa’s oldest independent bookstore probably has Tulsa’s oldest lunch counter, too. Located in the downtown Quaker Drug Store until Steve Stephenson bought it in 1947, this counter has seen a lot of elbows. Order an old-fashioned soda or shake or a vanilla Coke to drink with your homemade chicken salad, egg salad, or pimento salad sandwich.The counter stools are also original but there are only 12 of them so sometimes there’s a wait. In business for 20 years, owner Margaret Rzepczynski takes Sunday off. A lot of her customers are regulars and come in on the days she serves their favorite specials—maybe Polish pierogies or Hungarian goulash. Purists go for the Kassler rippchen (smoked pork loin) or her Wiener schnitzel.And they wash it down with German beer (or wine). Whether you just want a sandwich or a whole meal, this is a good spot. Be sure and save room for some of her German chocolate cake or strudel. And you can pick up deli meats, brats, or German specialty items like spaetzle and streusel mix.
