Description: Boys and girls of all ages can learn ballet, tap, jazz, hip-­hop, Mexican folkloric, flamenco, and other types of dance through the city’s special programs division. Youngsters also can sign up for basic tumbling skills and flexibility training. Music programs include guitar, keyboard, and percussion. All classes provide possibilities for exhibition and performance. Description: One of 7 YMCA locations in San Antonio, the TriPoint YMCA opened downtown in 2009. Description: This course, designed by Philadelphia’s A. W. Tillinghast (who also designed Inverness, Baltusrol, and Winged Foot), holds the distinction as the oldest 18-hole public course in the state. Opened in 1916, the course was designed to utilize the river and the many tall oak and pecan trees of the park, especially on the front 9. The par 71 course first hosted the Texas Open in 1922 and today is listed in the Texas Registry of Historic Sites, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, and the Texas Open Hall of Honor. Renovations in 2008 added 30 new bunkers to the course.

Description: Located in historic Riverside Park along the San Antonio River, this course got its start in 1918 as a 9-hole course; today it offers 27 holes: a par 3 course and a full-­size, 18-hole championship course. The course’s biggest challenge is on the 7th hole, where trees block the right side of the fairway.

Description: This 18-hole, par 71 course has been rated one of the top 25 public courses in America by Golf Digest magazine. Its assets include oak-­lined fairways and beautiful greens. This was the site of the 50th PGA Championship in 1968; the course was also selected by the USGA as the site of the 2001 US Amateur Public Links Championship. Pecan Valley’s original architect was J. Press Maxwell, although the course underwent a $5.5 million renovation under the direction of architect Bob Cupp in 1998. The club includes a restaurant, pro shop, driving range, and practice green.

Description: Designed by Keith Foster, this links-­style 18-hole, par 71 course is yet another example of San Antonio’s creative reuse of limestone quarries. The back 9 of this beautiful course are set in a century-­old quarry pit; the front 9 are tucked in rolling grasslands. Tee times are accepted up to 30 days in advance. The Quarry also has a clubhouse and a pro shop.

Description: This course, which opened in 1997, is located about 20 minutes from downtown. Designed by Randy Heckenkemper with input from PGA pros Scott Verplank and Willie Wood, the course utilizes 262 acres of wooded land. Patterned after the highly successful Silverhorn layout in Oklahoma City, the 18-hole, par 72 course features narrow fairways and soft, undulating greens. The club also includes a pro shop and a driving range.
