Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Vacation Journal: Where To Put The Road Signs

I had to interrupt my Corpus Christi diversion with another diversion, this one in the Rio Grande Valley. Six hours squeezed in to one day, mostly driving, but had to check on the new signs put up by TXDOT. I've waited a long time for all the changes to be made, what with the adding of assurance markers and guide sign updates. Yes, this could have been another Interstate 69 update, but I'll just do the honors here instead.

The powers that be at TXDOT did a fine job erecting the signage reflective of the recent redesignations to I-69E, I-69C, and I-2. The exit numbers reflect the mile markers of each highway, although the workers could have superimposed the redundancy of the word "Exit" on the guide signs by eliminating it on each one, which they can actually do now rather than making all-new signs. But this writer noticed something else happening among the transportation addenda agenda, and that's the placement of the new gore signs (For the uninitiated, those would be the square signs with the word "EXIT" and the arrow below it pointing to the ramp) along portions of the highway. Usually, the gore signs are placed in the apex between the exit ramp and freeway mainlanes. Well, the folks in the RGV decided to get cute and try a new idea with the gore signs by placing them to the right of the ramp. Now, why is that? If a ramp is too tight with the mainlanes, then why can't TXDOT place the gore sign, usually situated with two spikes, with a single T-spike in the apex? They would have had decent-enough room for it in the apex. But along I-2, you will frequently see gore signs on specially-designed T-spikes with an angle built into a concrete barrier, placed to the right of the ramp. I thought the signs to the right were to be intended for the rectangular, yellow signs for exit speed X mph. For some reason, I haven't seen many of those in recent years on new or updated ramps.

Oh, well. If that's what the Pharr District wants to do, then that's their prerogative. Happy motoring to all of you out there! Oh, and that crack about interrupting my trip, well, I'd planned that all along....

Two hours to head to the Valley, five-plus hours in the RGV, and two more to get back to Corpus. In all probability, I won't do that again.
