Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Texas Hill Country: Where The Boundary Should End

Posted 09-03-2018 at 12:26 PM by case44

Disbelief rocked this writer the first time he (or I ) looked at an online map from the Texas Hill Country visitor website. I mean, the expression was aghast. There are portions of the state of Texas that I feel need to belong in the Texas Hill Country, mainly in the north, and, for some reason, they're not.

Before I go any further, here's that link for your perusal: https://hill-country-visitor.com/hill-country-map/

Oh, the southern, eastern, and western boundaries, for the most part, are fine as they are, even though it's a little surprising that San Antonio city proper is not included in the THC area. Odd. But there is lack. Still amazing that places like Lampasas, Lometa, San Saba, Hamilton, and as far north as Glen Rose are not included in the Hill Country area. Those locales do take on some of the THC characteristics topographically. Heck, Granbury ought to be the gateway to the Texas Hill Country tour area, not Burnet. That's right: Stretching all the way from North Texas, through Central Texas, and into South and Southwest Texas, a huge swath of real estate. It's really needing to be bigger than it already is, and everything is bigger in Texas. How can you go through, say, Hico, and think you're not in the Hill Country?

Here's a challenge: Just go on Google Maps Street View. Take a look at the U.S. Highway 281 corridor from Hico to Lampasas, and see if you don't agree. This is one of God's most marvelous creations. One of these days, this writer intends to get back there for some R&R. There's really no better place.

You could say that this area has characteristics of it:

Granted, the trees are smaller, and it's in a protected valley, but it bears a resemblance.

That example is a bit of a stretch, but Menard and even Eden on US 83 should probably be included on that map, and Ozona to the west resembles it a little.

    Good point with Hico.

I used to take 281 from Wichita Falls to Marble Falls to avoid DFW and I-35 entirely.

That stretch south of I-20 seemed like hill country to me. Very nice drive. 75 mph speed limit is nothing to complain about either!
