User-submitted facts and corrections:

  • Although Hendersonville is officially listed as being the location, Mountain Home was, if my memory serves me correct, the closest community to the site of the worst air disaster in the United States for the entire year of 1967. At 1201 P.M. on July 19 of that year, a Piedmont Airlines Boeing 727-22, operating as Flight 22, had just taken off from runway 16 at the Asheville Municipal Airport, bound for Roanoke, VA. On board were 74 passengers, 3 flight deck crewmembers, and two stewardesses. Piedmont Flight 22 was just initiating a turn toward the northeast over the vicinity of Interstate 26 when a private Cessna 310 (ironically owned by the Lanseair corporation, an aircraft insurance company) with 3 men aboard, ripped into the fuselage of the Piedmont jet. Much wreckage from both planes and many of the victims were strewn along a path one-half mile wide by one and a half miles long over the area, with one person falling through the roof of a house. The Cessna 310 was found to be 16 miles off course, reason never determined,in airspace allocated to Piedmont Flight 22. A total of 82 lives were lost that day, an unacceptable price to pay for a lack of communication and resulting confusion. I still remember hearing the news bulletin on the car radio only minutes after the accident.
