There were obvious changes after, what isn't understood is that there were changes BEFORE.18-20 year old kids don't just go out and open fire on other 18-20 year old kids, not in what at the time was actually farm country. What made that happen?
There is enormous context surrounding this story, but none of the "experts",least of all Michener, even had any interest in looking into any of it.
They prefer to believe that nothing led up to what happened. They ignored the Guard's call out in '68,not at all long before May 4th.They ignored the impact of a week's rioting in the largest nearby city that obliterated an entire area of the city. They turned their backs on the arson that destroyed the ROTC building,as they ignored the presence of out of town "guests" that fanned the flames of riot, rather than guiding a legitimate protest.
The history of May 4th has been written,by and large,by those with an agenda that had little,if anything at all,to do with protests against the war.
It's been written by those who had no interest in truth, but a very personal interest in turning it into something that never existed.A story of uncaring, robotic murderers who killed without feeling, remorse or consequence.
And some, not a one who actually paid the ultimate price, have benefited greatly in the aftermath.
And some, the least of them, still do.
