Obviously, my attempt at ridiculous examples in an attempt to focus on concepts rather than specifics was not ridiculous enough for some folks. Obtuse much?

No, I don't think waste management is the shining reason to move to Alaska.

No, I don't want to talk to Met about Halibut Police because I've already come to understand their ridiculousness. It was sort of the point of bringing them up.

And since it seems I must say it to be perfectly clear (acute?)...

No, I don't really think bears will come and haul my garbage away.

Well, they might haul some of my garbage away.

That was a joke. Just to be specific.

Since someone seems to be hell bent on missing the point, I'll try to narrow it down to something incontestable.

I like my idea of Alaska. I've talked to people who live there about the area, the culture, the rain, what I can expect out of my garden. I will scout it to ensure that what I believe fits what is real, and I don't expect any huge shocks. I've lived in the sort of climate where I plan to go, and I believe it will suit me just fine. Especially the part where there aren't a lot of people. I will pay no taxes, other than what I've indicated, because there are none to pay. I will hunt. I will fish. I will make fun of Halibut Police as much as I can get away with. Oh, and I will try not to get et by a bear while taking out the garbage.

They tried to wreck a little city with their idiotic protests, and the state rallied. Normal people rallied. The libs are dying, they're pulling out all their stupid crap, and we all LOL at them. Don't take the media reports as gospel. The libs are dying on the vine.

Life is much better today than before!
Really? Then I would do a LOT of research man. I came here knowing virtually nothing about AK other than the fact that it is cold there. The climate is what drew me in. I love cold, and when I found out I could live somewhere with 6-8 months of winter and be surrounded by the most beautiful scenery and biggest mountains in North America, I got even more excited. If the only reason you want to move to Alaska is to "get govt off your back", there are states where you can do that and be a lot less cold and far away, and typically those states will have far less government involvement than Alaska. Alaska's government seems to be quite involved in people's lives, but rather than taxing them to death, Alaska GIVES money to its citizens. Because of this place, and a few excellent members in particular, I have learned a ton about Alaska. And I still have more to learn.

Also, your posts pretty much read like a Rush Limbaugh transcript. My mother is (unfortunately) a big fan, so I know how to recognize the jargon. You even go so far as to create an abbreviation for mainstream media, which is a dubious term at best. I would suggest that if you care to be taken seriously by anyone except your fellow die-hards, you should use language that is more reasonable. If you want to learn about Alaska, and why people should or shouldn't move there, you've come to the right place. If you want to complain about "damn liberals" or whatever, I think you should look elsewhere. That mess gets old quick.

Maybe folks should reexamine their hangups.
I think the problem is that people (not necessarily in this thread, although there are hints of it, but in general US political discourse) don't really understand the term, and tend to use "socialism" as a synonym for "liberal-ish policies I dislike." If it's a policy they DO like, then it's not socialism, somehow.

There does seem to be a recent influx of people who seem to think that Alaska is some sort of neo con haven.

Alaska is the most "big government" state in the US if you look at the number of government employees per capita. We also have the most state spending per capita as well.

Yet it's still very free here...one could almost conclude that "big government" and "liberty" aren't mutually exclusive

^ Can't rep you apparently. I need to go to some other forum and rep some people.

As for why people think Alaska is a neo-con haven... I honestly have no idea. Maybe they figure it's because it's BIG, like their new assault rifle. Which they have a RIGHT to have, by the way. God knows everyone and their uncle needs an AK-47 in order to live a fulfilling life.

Don't you live in NC? Don't lecture me. I'm not a rush fan. LOL, you know nothing about me. Keep your assumptions to yourself. 'assume', it makes an ass out of U. I just want to be left alone.

In what way? What is it that you think Alaska might have for you? How exactly do you want government off your back? I think that a to of people who are disillusioned with the lower 48 look to Alaska for answers that it may or may not have.
