Not sure why there's snarkyness in some of the comments here; the OP sounds like a classic fit for Alaska. I'm assuming you've already sunk a substantial investment into your education, so I'd recommend not throwing it away entirely. Check out UAF in Fairbanks, who have a world renowned Geophysics program. It's likely the only university in the world where you can live in the woods in a one room cabin without running water, and be a phd student. As far as remoteness goes, Fairbanks is a substantial town, but it's in the middle of nowhere. Not hard to make friends, or to be alone. For your other questions, yeah I guarantee it'll be worth your while to come up, rent a car and check out the scene.

Note: subsistence implies hunting/fishing. Just so ya know.

If not Alaska, try Nevada too, especially if you don't know if you can't adjust to the cold (or you just prefer the heat). There are parts of Nevada that are miles and miles and miles of nowhere.

Just sounds like the makings of another "school bus" movie to me. But most western states have places to get lost in.

Vector Sum: If you can tap into family money for extra income. Do it. Alaska is worth the investment for living and working. Once in Alaska its part of you. Makes you feel good inside.
