Rance, I notice that the rig is open at the top. Doesn't that draw cold air into the complex beneath it?

Yes. And when the wind blows is shoots right down the inside of those windwalls. The rigs have million btu air heaters and many steam heaters. But when it's 70 below wind shooting down inside it has a bite to it. On a calm day however it is quite comfortable. It get's really cold working up in the derrick where those smaller enclosures are. One guy has to stand out on a narrow board or gangway...and the wind blows right up your skirt. I spent 10 years working up in the derrick in all kinds of weather. Including lightning storms out on Cook Inlet! But the view is spectacular from up there...and it's really hard to hear when the boss' yell at you...so I loved it.

Warpt that particular rig is being towed by two Peak sow's (overly large semi tractors) and they do about 5 to 6 mph. That other rig (grey) picks itself up and drives down the road on eight 12' tires. It only does 2.5 mph. And it drives with a joy stick no larger than your thumb. The grey one weighs about 1.5 million pounds and drives down the road!

Is all of the moving equipment owned by the oil companies?

Peak or what used to be Veco owns the trucks and cats and graders. The drilling companies like Nabors, Nordic or Doyon own the drilling rigs. Operators like BP or ConocoPhillips own the field, wells and production facilities.

How long do those rigs stay in production before they need to be serviced & overhauled?
