I plan to move the end of spring to Fort Greely. I am a Department of the Army employee (GS-12). Housing there seems scarce? Does anyone know if I will be able to live in base housing being a Government employee? If not how do people up there afford a 250,000 thousand home when the medium income is 50,000 thousand dollars or so a year?

I don't know if you can get military housing to live in, but you may be able to rent an apartment in Delta Junction nearby. You will need a vehicle that's in good condition, and winterized, to drive back and forth. Keep in mind that you will be moving to the interior where it gets quite cold during the winter months. It gets quite windy around Fort Greely, but the cold can be fierce.

Military Installation Guides 2.0

or this one. You can get the zip code from this one, and enter it on the first link (above):

Good answer Ray. I myself have no idea, but here is one additional link that will hook you up with Fort Greely's Housing Office--even if they can't give you on post housing, they will be able to give you rental/buying contacts out in the Delta Junction (quite the run-on sentence, huh).

https://onestop.army.mil/armyonestop.asp?v=1

At the above link, look under "G" / Greely. Your car can wait to be winterized until you get up here...SPRING/SUMMER/BREAKUP! are rapidly approaching (one less stressor for you) . The mechanics up here are old pros at it and will be able to hook you up before next winter comes around.

Talking about Spring, I was just looking at the willow buds starting to show (not far from Fairbanks). But it's still getting to below zero during the night.

If you're talking military auctions, you're looking for Defense Reutilization Marking Offices (DRMO). My googlefu brings you the following: DRMS Sites

Click on the Alaskan town you want (Fairbanks or Anchorage).

Default Ft. Greely

I am moving from NC to Ft. Greely in May. I have three children ages 16, 12, and 9. Are there any activities for the children? How are the schools?

Look for the book "Recess at 20 Below" for your kids.

If you're outdoorsy, Delta Junction is a paradise.
If you're coming from Fayetteville, or thereabouts, you're going to need some time to adjust (that's what I did, 12 years ago).

In just about all the smaller towns of Alaska, if your kids are into sports such as basketball, they will do fine. There is always open gym or a court outside the school for them to play at and it allows them to fit in pretty quickly. The smaller schools don't have the budgets that you find down South either or like Anchorage or Fairbanks, so outside of the basic sports, there isn't a lot outside of the school.

As far what they were use to down south, they will find that the lifestyle is a lot different when playing outside, outside of the sports, they will get onto doing stuff like being out in the woods a lot that they didn't do there I am sure.

Since town is pretty stretched out (not to mention, very few people), you will either be doing a lot of taxi work for them to visit friends, or let the 16 year old get his driver's lic. to cut your driving down a bit.

Snowmachines and fourwheelers are pretty much the staple in the smaller towns, not to mention a lot of fun and cheaper on gas for a trip to the stores, which by the way, are pretty small and don't carry much other than the basics and are pretty pricey verses going into the bigger towns like Anchorage or Fairbanks. The Base Exchange isn't going to carry a whole lot, but will have some stuff like milk and bread items.

Lots of good fishing and hunting there too.

IF you approach the place with an open mind and remember that it is nothing like where you came from, you will have a blast...
