What do you do when a culture has been displaced? I don't have the answers - I wish I did. Bortsct328 last paragraph made a very important statement - this is the education that is needed and this is what helps build self-esteem.

ouch...thank you very much...I was trying to be facetious but it did not come across that way and I humbly apologize for this,,,

Alcohol isn't a Native American disease, it was brought upon us by the white man. Thousands of years we didn't depend on it and we got by without it. Now I see a bunch of friends who depend on it. They don't work and ran off most of their friends because of it. Many times I've tried to help them by telling them that they aren't getting anywhere in life because of it. Never works. Once they have it in their system, it's hard for them to change. Now getting more of it available, I'm sure we'll see deaths over this winter because they can't control themselves. Of course, the sponsors of the lifting of the limits are white...go figure.

As an ethnic Irish descended man, I found I could not tolerate the effects of alcohol. I was lucky enough to have to go through rehab while in the service and with that and AA, I haven't had a drink in 20 some years. But the recidivism rate for rehab (even with AA) is about 60%. I am one of the lucky ones.

Alcoholism is a genetic problem. It is a disease without a real cure. There is no medication to allow someone like me to metabolize alcohol like a normal person. It's a real disease. I wouldn't say that someone with an allergy to peanuts is on their own. As in, "it's their problem, I need peanuts and peanut butter and if they die, too bad." Warnings are necessary, as are controls.

But again, it's just an opinion of mine.

Mal you are 100% right. My dad (also 100% Irish) couldn't tolerate either. In his case he became an alcoholic and no amount of treatment or programs ever took.
Very odd in our family that my brother looks 100% like our Polish mother but his alcohol ability is from dad. Luckily my brother saw the writing on the wall and stopped his social drinking when he saw where it was leading.
I'm so glad you were able to get the help you needed and it worked for you.

It's a pain in the butt, because I LIKED a beer after mowing the lawn. I LIKE beer during the SuperBowl. And of course there are all the new drinks that everyone tells me that I would love. But, I haven't lost any days to a blackout in 24 years. I haven't had a hangover. I haven't had to find where I left my car. I don't need to take a taxi there when I do find it. And She is happier. Not a small consolation as I have to live with her.

But I did like my beer.

LOL Mal it could be worse. It made my dad mental that my sisters hubby(now ex) was a brewer at Anheiser Busch. So needless to say their house was beer central which they gave to everyone.
But because of dads problem he wasn't on their donation list needless to say dad was ticked off.

Thanks Mal and Jersey for sharing - you echo'ed some of my family's experiences with it, too. Which is probably why I felt so comfortable working in recovery tx for a while...........

Like Barkley said - I don't know how it all works in the outlying areas - but I'm sure there will be some scumbags ready to cash in on the increased commerce that will come from the new changes. I guess time will tell.
