Salt Cedar are not native to the area and are invasive. Cottonwoods are native to the area.

There have been many projects along the Rio Grande and Pecos and millions of dollars spent over the past 10 years trying to get rid of the Salt Cedar. Hopefully we will eventually win this Salt Cedar war...

The other invasive tree in the Bosque ,aside from Salt Cedar (Tamarisk), is Russian Olive.

There is an adventure reality show on TV these days where the contestants are traveling through stands of tamarisk along a river and it was boiling my blood (If you have ever tried too bushwhack through the stuff... It sucks, ecological destruction aside) until I reminded myself that it is native to the area the contestants were in (North Africa).

Salt Cedar was planted in the Bosque on purpose. It was originally planted to stabilize stream banks.

I don't know about Russian Olive...
