Wait... did I leave NM right before Rio Rancho became more than just a burb? What's the draw? When can ABQ start charging a toll for coming across the river.

Hahah well Rio Rancho is the city of vision its the fastest growing city in our state now..and i hate to say it but the planning of that city is....yikes...yikes and yikes but the development is crazy!

The draw is the jobs in Rio Rancho larger corporations are moving there but i dont see why people wanna live there besides that haha
The whole toll both sounds good ahhaha

oh.. RR started picking up in the mid 90's

Honestly though, It appears Rio Rancho is getting too big for its britches (wow, I sound like I am 80). It is very doubtful that they could sustain a new mall (especially w/ Cottonwood a stones throw away) all these high rises, etc. with only 100,000 people. Its a suburb...their arena only caused problems among the metro, their ever expanding houses with out the infrastructure has only caused problems among the metro, their lack of schools has only caused problems in the metro. Rio Rancho needs to slow down a bit, before the city is completely bankrupt.

I know tell me about it gosh.. that whole downtown thing too.. haha
125,000 by 2010.. that is just some of the fastest growth in the southwest for such a small city that depends on albuquerque.

Man... we lived in Paradise Hills in the late 80's... that's a nothing commute now (compared to Ventana Ranch).

I'll agree with the britches comment!

The 70,000 was 2 years ago, that was a 2006 estimate..way gone
Id also expect for it to be a little more if RR is going to hit 125,000 by 2010,the city limits had also expanded.

The only possibility for a new toll road into Albuquerque would be between Southern/Meadowlark in RR/Corrales and Tramway.

For this to occur:

*Corrales would have to agree to it (or the state would have to step in and condemn the land), probably involving a deep cut-and-cover underpass beneath Corrales Rd. with truck restrictions and significant sound dampening. The cost of this would probably rival that of a bridge itself, not including the legal expenses.

*Sandia Pueblo would have to agree to it (no way in hell unless they get most of the toll revenue).

I personally would like the idea of such a toll road; it would lighten traffic on the other bridges, reduce unneeded miles travelled, and not necessarily decrease the cost of commuting, which shouldn't increase sprawl.

Sandia Pueblo's tribal government would have to spearhead (no pun or slight intended) the project, enlisting state support and either steamrolling Corrales opposition or finding a pro-bridge village government.

Before another road bridge or toll road, would be best to get some sort of high-speed rail link to parallel one of the existing bridges (most likely Paseo) and link in the westside's bedroom communities to Albuquerque's mass transit grid.
