I'd venture to say that the average Mexican mestizo likely has more Indigenous ancestry than the average person who self identifies as "Native American" in the United States.

Mexican Americans on average tend to have predominantly European genetic ancestry.
Yes, almost every single Mexican is Native American. Very few Mexicans don't have Native American blood. There are more pure blood Natives in Mexico than whites. Just look at us, we've got copper colored skin, high cheek bones, black hair, and brown eyes. In fact, the word "Mexico" itself is a Native American word. It's an Aztec word. The symbol on the Mexican flag is Aztec too. Stay proud, bud.
As does a large percentage of Americans who self-identify as Native American.
The US suffers from negating the mixed races. In many cases its a long history of self-deception.
The reality is that there are not many Native Americans in the USA, most of the one's claiming to be are mere mestizos (mixed folks) that resent the fact they are mestizos (or could have their eyes on the economic benefits to claim a Native American identity, either way its a form a denial of reality.)
This denial of reality isn't limited to Native Americans, look what has happened to the mulattoes of the USA. To many people in the USA its as if the mulatto doesn't exist, even though they are everywhere starting with the president himself. A large percentage of people that the average US American sees as "blacks" are in fact mulattoes, but the negation of reality makes it hard for many people to notice unless someone points it out.
It seems as if large segments of US Americans love to pretend to be something they are not and if someone points out the truth (that most people claiming to be Native American or African American or most other hyphenated American) are in fact mixed people, then someone feels offended and begins to attack you. Messed up people that love self-deception. lol

Basically, the average Mexican is a mestizo mixed in the following proportions: 63% Amerindian, 30% Spanish, and 3% African.
I think the average Mexican is too mixed (on average a third of their DNA is non-Amerindian) to consider themselves just Native Americans. They are legitimate mestizos or mixed folks with a small minority of true Native Americans.
The typical mixture of Mexican mestizos is much more similar to Peruvian and Ecuadorian mestizos than to mestizos of most other countries. In Latin America only Peruvians, Bolivians, and Guatemalan have more Amerindian in their mixtures than Mexicans do; and in most Latin American countries the average person has more Spanish blood than is the case with the average Mexican (compare 30% Spanish blood in average Mexicans vs 46% in average Colombians, 49% in average Nicaraguans, 52% in average Dominicans; 60% in average Costa Ricans, or 64% in average Puerto Ricans.)
Population density and distribution in Mexico. Here we can see that the bulk of Mexico's population lives in central and southern Mexico. The northern part of Mexico, which is also the 'whiter' part, is one of the least populated areas. I doubt much has changed since 2000.
Mexico is also one of my most favorite countries and explains why I visit the country so often even though I'm not Mexican, I don't have Mexican ancestry, and I'm not related or dating anyone that is Mexican.

That's definitely not what the stats say. The stats say that only 3% of the Mexican population has African blood, which is very different from saying that the average Mexican is 3% African.

To all of that, people should also add this ancestry mixture study and compare with the population density and distribution.
Red = Native American
Blue = European
Yellow = Sub-Saharan African
Each circle shows the average admixture proportions in major urban Mexican populations, not ethnic compositions in each city.
I don't even know why some people here are in denial. Its almost as if some people are insulted that the average Mexican is a mestizo averaging roughly 60% Amerindian genetic input.
