Well, looks like apocalypse averted. After over a decade, the Biden administrative is making overtures to the Venezuelan government to get their oil taps running to ease global energy concerns. So much for standing up for the free world and ridding the world of the "evil socialist Maduro" regime. As I routinely say on city data, foreign relations come down to interest, not morality or values. In typical hypocritical fashion the U.S. tried to bring misery upon millions of people, only to now back track once Venezuela became useful again. Can’t make this stuff up folks.

The USA making business deals with Venezuela doesn't necessarily means much money will make it to the people. Oh yes, Maduro and company probably can't sleep for the next few nights. They can't believe how much their personal bank accounts will grow in the next few months! Long live corruption! I repeat, that is them. Venezuelans in general are something else.

As for the USA being hypocritical, I think people knew that. Countries don't have friends and enemies, they have interests. Your foe becomes your buddy by tomorrow and your current buddy becomesyour foe. That's politics. For Pete's sake, the USA started with a paper saying all men are created equal signed by slave owning men who were not willing to give up being slave owners anytime soon. Hellooo? Hypocritical 101 from the start.

The USA isn't alone in this either.

So Venezuela was never a national security threat to begin with yet USA was pulverizing the economy to the point the average person was hungry? This is why I'm against sanctions for anything beyond military weapons.

It was during Chavez's time when the bomb was made. Chavez wanted to shore up his personal wealth and did so by nationalizing all foreign owned US assets. There was no secret consortium of what was going to happen. When any foreign country invests in another, if the host country then decides to steal the improvements, there will be harsh repercussions from the investing nation.

No arguments here, but you would be surprised at how many people in U.S. believe their country acts off a moral presupposition. I wouldn't say Venezuela is any more corrupt than other South American nations. When the oil taps were running and fetching top dollar, the people enjoyed the fruits as well.

That's already been discussed in this forum and dismissed as a reason for Venezuela's state of poverty.

The sanctions against Venezuela most were personal sanctions focused on the Venezuela leaders, oil sanctions, who's profits were being ripped off by the leaders anyways, were relatively recent and were balanced by economic aid delivered directly to the people of Venezuela. No one seems to mention that part.

But regardless, yes it is strange. Even more strange - the administration pissed off our main oil ally, Saudi Arabia, so that they are unwilling to increase production. In one year's time, we've managed to turn a friend into an enemy, and now we have an enemy that we have to turn into a friend. I mean, the US doesn't even recognize Madura as the official leader of his country.

Many people confuse the people of a country with the government of a country. Often governments do things that most of the people object and vice versa.

In this thread it’s about governments and the USA government is and has been very hypocritical on various topics.

There's nothing about Biden that I like, but KSA and most oil producers produce at or near capacity. They don't lower or raise production for political reasons. They make a virtue out of necessity by, for example, claiming benevolence towards the West when prices are dropping anyway, or to be "pissed off" at Israel or the U.S. when the market tightens.

I wonder if Venezuelans look at what’s happening in Ukraine and think it’s a picnic compared to their daily lives.
