Yes the gap seems rather large in much of Asia.

genetically modified asians.

Not true at all. Most markets in Asia don't carry American GMO food, period. It's way too expensive to have to ship it all the way there.

There are many parts of China that are not westernized and the people are also getting taller with each generation.

I've met my fair of short Asians, but I've met some Northern Chinese people (both male and female) who are very tall and quite big boned, and are as tall as Westerners; and maybe even taller.

I think aside from good genes, diet has to do with it too. Milks and Yogurts probably really help with growth.

Yes, Normally Asians are shorter than other. As a compare to body building, Africans are ahead. But a good diet can help you a lot in increasing your height.

Diet can help you reach your genetic potential, but it (diet) has probably already reached it's peak now - so I don't think the next generations will continue to get taller - both Asian and otherwise.
Most of the younger generation are a few cm taller than me, around 175-177cm,
There is a lack of really tall ones though - like you see in Europeans, ie over 190cm, that skew the mean.
There is no genetic selection on the basis of height.

My cousin, Singaporean, is over 190cm but he's exceptional. My grandfather was nearly 6 feet which was actually really tall for a Singaporean born in the 1920s. Unfortunately my mother was the shortest in the family and I'm 5'9". My other grandfather, my dad's dad, is 5'2".

In China, people born in the 1940s~1960s are the shortest, due to bad economy.

My grandfather is 176cm or something, my father 172cm, and me 179cm.
My grandmother is 162cm, my mother 155cm.

Asian in general at not that tall or not that short; this is from my observation with Southeast Asian and East Asian. I would say the gap between these two groups is about 3 inches at most on average. Most East Asian are no where near as tall as a shooting guard of the NBA and most South East Asian are no where near as short as Muggsy Bogues. The height difference between these two Asian groups that not noticeable.

Go from Hong Kong to Beijing and you'll definitely notice a difference. Better yet from Saigon or Jakarta.
