I don't believe in them, but can we find a sound scientific explanation for them? I kind of think most claims to "irrefutable miracles" (i.e. unexplained medical occurences) are just outside of our current knoweledge.
What do you think?
I can't think of any known phenomenon that appears to be a miracle and is just lacking a scientific explanation. All of the miracles I've seen appear to be hoaxes, photographic screwups, or just plain potatoheadism.

Yeah, I'd say all the apparitions and appearances are almost certainly make-believe (I'm extra skeptical of the usual uneducated, imaginative children who claim to see Mary), but how do we explain the tilma of Juan Diego? I don't believe it's a miracle, simply a fabrication, but I was wondering what other atheistic takes on it might be...
The word 'miracle' is one of the most overused in the language, along with 'hero'. A miracle is simply something highly unusual which can't be definitively explained given our current state of knowledge. That is, unless it's a complete sham or fabrication, as religious ones tend to be.
It's weird isn't it. Someone lives in a world that is subject to the laws of nature 24/7 and as soon as something they have no explanation for, they will think the laws were broken for some purpose.
Many times, it's just the laws of probability finally getting around to those 1 out of 1,000,000 odds. No one is counting the 999999 times a miracle didn't happen.

The existence of the universe is one that can't be explained by science.
