Suburbs for Millennials (Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Roswell: house, neighborhood, buy)

I recognize that the subject of this thread comes across as an oxymoron to a lot of people. However, believe it or not, there are some millennials out there that still prefer the suburbs. My wife and I (and our two children approaching kindergarten) live in Forsyth County (just north of Alpharetta), and are in the process of moving to the closer in suburbs. Our move is driven by a desire to reduce my commute (I work in midtown). If I leave home by 6am, getting to midtown within 45 minutes is a breeze. However, leaving at a more reasonable time like 7 or 7:30am results in a commute of around 1.5-2 hours, which is unacceptable. We are focusing in on East Cobb, Roswell, and the south parts of Alpharetta, so basically anything between I-75 and GA-400 and within 20-25 miles of downtown. With all of that said, my question is what suburb are other millennials like myself moving to, particularly those that have school aged children? Our current neighborhood in Forsyth County is full of young professionals in their late 20's and early 30's and I would love to find that same environment in the closer in suburbs.

I have a few (millennial) friends that live in the Brookhaven / Chamblee / North Decatur area of you are looking for some other close-in-suburbs to consider.

I would imagine most millennials live in the suburbs so there is no reason to get down on yourself.

Do you have any research to base your 'most' numbers on?

the difference in commute is not going to be that great between alpharetta and south forsyth. it might be worse coming from parts of east cobb, since you don't have a freeway to access. i lived in south forsyth for years and then moved to alpharetta; it is still a pain in the ass to get intown.

all that being said i think it's weird that some of us millennials have kids in kindergarten now. unless you're a gen-xer in disguise...

really though, what are you looking for in a neighbourhood? price range, housing characteristics, what would you like nearby, are your kids in public school or private, etc.? have you tried riding MARTA from the north springs station?

Yeah, you're really not going to save that much in a commute if you're looking at East Cobb, Roswell, or Alpharetta. If you're going to move closer, you mine as well go all-in and look at the southern parts of Sandy Springs, Chamblee, Brookhaven, the southwestern half of Dunwoody.

cq, think about it.

If half the city of Atlanta was millennials -- which it obviously isn't -- that's only about 220,000.

That's less than 5% of the ATL as a whole. If even 20% of the rest of the metro area is millenials, that's over four times as many.
