Majority of the violent crime happens in SW Atlanta, which is the equivalent to Los Angeles's South-Central, and there are a few other bad pockets. Downtown Atlanta is actually reletively safe with only a minimal amount of incidents.

Anywhere outside the 285, especially the north side, you will be fine. Lots of areas inside the 285 are fine and very expensive. Cherokee Co. is fine, but depending on what you intend to do for a living, you might want to consider much closer in. I wouldn't go farther out than Woodstock or Alpharetta, if you want a life.

Care to explain that?
I moved much further away than either of those just so I could enjoy life.

L.A.'s murder rate has seen a huge drop, 50% in some areas. I guess the high cost of living in some areas made some of the murderers relocate or perhaps they were looking for cake walk through the park cities. I'm sure some of the criminals are home grown.

The crime rate in an area 3000 miles away is much more unimportant than the crime rate at home.

You are joking right? I have walked around Compton at night, it is like a scene from a Quentin Tarantino movie, Atlanta has nothing to compare, there are worse areas in London than there are in Atlanta.

Default domestic violence

The number of murders in Atlanta jumped 22 percent while murders for the region of 5 million residents increased 12 percent last year, according to the FBI crime statistics released Monday.
That far surpassed the national murder increase of 1.8 percent and the nearly 7 percent increase in cities of more than 1 million people.
Domiestic violence is the main element in the crimes in Atlanta and Columbus. Georigia is number 5 in the ranking for states in which a woman is more likely to be killed by a spouse or significant other.

We need to do a better job of rearing our sons. Were it not for domestic violence, murder rate in Atlanta would be considerably lower.

Default The Atlanta Native Speaks...

With all this being said, I don't think this information is stopping people from moving here though...the population CONTINUES to grow everyday, so, although it is alarming, it is not a deterant.

And please, don't think that ANYWHERE is TOTALLY safe. Just be cautious; crime can happen even in the BEST northern (and southern) suburbs. Let's not be naive.

But, those were interesting statistics.

Yeah, it's still not Detroit (Thank God). The other thing to remember is that even though 2006 saw a huge jump from 2005, 2005 was a huge drop from 2004. 2006 was back to about the same level as 2004, which was an improvement from 2003, which was an improvement from 2002, and so on for about the last 10 years.
