Also, does this confirm that the land prep I saw going on is for the apartment project?

“North American Properties (NAP) is working closely with the Atlanta Beltline Inc. (ABI) to build an exciting, high quality mixed-use development on the existing environmentally contaminated land between Edgewood and DeKalb avenues.

ABI will take the necessary steps to temporarily route the trail around this environmental cleanup work and the early stages of the development’s construction until the site is safe for public use.

Construction schedules are currently being finalized pending the required City of Atlanta permits. NAP and ABI are committed to delivering an exceptional experience for all of our neighbors and guests who have the opportunity to enjoy this section of the Eastside Trail.”

I wish they'd leave some room right there for the possibility of an infill MARTA station, which would probably require re-aligning the road.

Though, I guess technically you could build the station Chicago-style above DeKalb Avenue, without moving the road. And the eastbound platform would have to be built over the freight tracks.

Let me see if I understand this: The extension will "open" in June . . . except it will be "closed and detoured" before it hits Dekalb until a project that is still in the permitting phases is sufficiently complete to allow safe passage?

Wasn't ABI touting an "early summer" opening for the eastside extension as recently as a few weeks ago? It's not really "complete" if it's detoured for the next 12 months, regardless of how they'd like to spin this. Wish ABI would grow a pair and make the developers protect the trail and it's users appropriately during construction, even if it's more costly for them to do so. The trail isn't "open" if it's impassable. Just another link in the chain of missed deadlines for Beltline projects, and this time all to accommodate the pocketbooks of a developer.

By ABI's logic, the eastside extension already is "open". I can get from Irwin to Kirkwood road now, "with a few detours" along the way

To what end? If people walking north on the Beltline walk one block to the west, so they can walk through a construction site, vs. walking one block up Krog St. to get back on the trail at Edgewood Avenue, what purpose would that serve? We're talking about one block of trail, and don't forget people will have to walk to Krog Street anyway to go through the tunnel.

ABI owned the land and clearly knew this was coming. They shouldn't have been bragging about the extension opening in early summer when they were well aware they'd be putting an asterisk by the word "opening" a few weeks later. This is an organization that has been repeatedly dogged by missed deadlines. This is another one. They could have just held off on bragging about the extension opening a couple of weeks and not had to walk that back.
