The Moore's Mill Publix does not have self checkout. I didn't realize this yesterday when I was there until my wife told me later after her visit to the store. Kind of a bummer for those quick trips to grab ice cream or something.

Also, on the earlier discussion regarding Moore's Mill and a traffic light. I found out why there isn't one: Moore's Mill is right-turn only onto Marietta. So, left-turners will still have to go down Coronet Way. It looks like they left space to add a left turn lane in the future, but it is not there now.

Default Publix #1226, Moore's Mill Center, 2275 Marietta Boulevard Northwest, Atlanta, Georgia 30318-2019

Publix #1226 being without self checkouts would not bother me. The Publix locations I frequent do not have them.

If a store has self checkout and I have few items, I will go through the self checkout. If I have carts loaded with items, I use the regular checkouts.

Well, yeah...anyone who has a full cart and goes through self checkout needs to be beaten with a hose.

If another supermarket or a hypermarket has two registers open each with more than three customers deep and self checkout open and I have a cart loaded with items, I will use the self checkout. I have used self checkout many times.

Publix is usually good about keeping enough regular checkout lanes open.

My thinking on self checkouts has evolved. When they first came out I thought they'd be much faster. And sometimes they still are.

However, many times they get backed up. I've noticed that the regular checkout lines are often just as fast or faster.

There's also the issue of labor. Are grocery stores shifting their payroll onto customers? And do self checkouts take away jobs?

It's certainly an interesting discussion, but I'm not necessarily sure they do, at least on a large scale. Self checkout is fine for a handful of items. But, once you get past about 10-12 items, the checker is able to do it much faster. Even waiting in line can be faster. And I'm betting most store patrons have more than 10-12 items. And for the ones who don't, the express lane is usually still open.

I've seen some people claim that they can go through self checkout with a cart full of items and do it faster than a checker, and I call BS on this. The self checkout has to weigh each item before the next one can be scanned. I used to work in a store as a checker. I had the fastest scan rate of anyone in my store. Yet, I still can't do self checkout faster than a standard checker.

I've never seen a publix with self-checkout anywhere ... ever.

The new Publix in Smyrna does not have self checkout either.

I was at a Publix in Alpharetta last Sunday and when I first got in line they were really backed up with very few lines open (I was with my elderly mother so this was a huge problem for me). But within a minute or two they had people scrambling everywhere to quickly open several more lanes.

Select Publix stores have self checkouts. I think most, if not all, North Carolina stores have self checkouts. A few of the new South Carolina stores may have them.
