This. They purged salary and older players as part of a rebuild. They are looking at the rebuild strategy of other teams like Houston, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. Gone are the days when they had a massive advantage due to TV revenue from TBS and could afford top 5 MLB combined player salaries. They have to compete smarter. I'm not a Braves fan, but what they are doing make sense. They went from a bottom 5 farm system to a top 5 system this past year with more talent inbound. Whether these prospects will eventually turn the team around remains to be seen, but they are better equipped to do that now than they were a year ago. I expect them to improve slightly next year and with the aim of putting a competitive team on the field for 2017. They should have a few more pieces in place before then and I expect them to likely make one or two 'splash' signings in free agency to try to round out the roster and re-energize the fanbase.

Of course the Braves attendance is down because of their performance. No one is denying that.

But this move has cost them fans too.

Just because the opening game at the new stadium will sell out doesn't mean most fans like the move to Cobb either.

Anyone who is such a fairweather fan that they would stop going to a Braves game because of a move a dozen miles up the road to a MUCH nicer neighborhood will be replaced several times over because of said move.

Perhaps, but I expect overall attendance to be higher. The Braves would gladly trade 1 fan who is fairweather and goes to 5 games a year to get an existing fan who goes to 5 games a year to attend 15 games a year. The move is about being closer to a larger portion of their fanbase while adding additional income streams which should help them add and retain talent. Adding and retaining talent should add to more wins. Staying in Turner Field was going to mean more of the same decline relative to the rest of baseball.

The move was one out of competitive preservation and about 'throwing the middle finger up' to the COA.

Nicer... that is debatable. What is not nicer is having only 1 option to get to a game and having to sit in traffic.

And you wonder why so many true Atlanta fans are no longer Braves fans? Braves are now just a wedge Cobb is using to further their rivalry with the rest of Atlanta. It is so sad and immature.

I think you meant "not about throwing the middle finger."
