According to this article: Research: Many Atlanta millennials are choosing OTP life - Curbed Atlanta

Really unsurprising, the intown lifestyle that is routinely touted here is simply not attainable for many people when they decide it's time to buy. But it is kind of surprising that they are moving so far out.

It sounds like the "drive-to urban" developments that a lot of y'all like to complain about are working at attracting people.

This data has been ripped on their website. They do not include important info like demographics, education levels, etc.

Why does that matter? Nobody discusses those things when Millennials move into cities so why should they matter when they move out?

I would say more Millennials (people in their early 20s-mid-30s) than recorded in recent years are NOT in a position to buy at all, no matter where they might be willing or interested in doing so. Many Millennials are facing extreme student loan debt, lack of job readiness and a highly competitive and unstable work world. So, regardless, the home ownership level in the mid-20s-mid-30s age range is likely lower than it has been in a very long time. If those who can buy are able to get financing, and especially if they plan on having children or already have them, it stands to reason they would look beyond the intown experience at other choices.

So what is happening? There is a surge in uneducated, minority Millennials that are buying properties in the exurbs?

Maybe more of them could buy sooner if they rented in reasonable areas instead of blowing their entire paychecks on overpriced intown rents.

Without having the other demographic data, we do not know.

Actually it has been well documented that Millennials with higher education move into cities more than those without.

I don't doubt that's the case. But we shouldn't tout headlines that say "Millennials return to cities" but then dismiss headlines that say "Millennials leave cities" by saying, "Well, it's not the affluent, educated, White ones that are leaving cities." If we're going talk about "Millennials" in this context, then I think we should be clear that we're talking about a very specific demographic.

I am not the writer or editor so I cannot make that call.
