Why at the airport?

It's out of the way and in one of the most connected locations in the world. The casino would be in a hotel on airport property, not inside the actual airport itself.

I think the point is people do not want the casino integrated with the city and this a good way to make it accessible but isolated.

Unless the casino is in every concourse its not the most connected and its not accessible unless its a 5 min walk from the Airport MARTA Station

There are no examples of a casino that integrates with the city and does not become an inward facing, fortress, and super block. They are designed to keep people inside.

Well, to keep them inside while they are visiting sure. But how long are those visits? At a casino, folks generally show up and spend the night. I think casino visits are generally much longer than stadium and museum visits. But, I could be wrong...

It would be. The hotel is on the other side of the Skytrain (rental car train). So it would be much less than a 5 min walk from MARTA. It will be right next to the airport

Casinos are far worse than stadiums when it comes to claiming economic impacts/developments in their neighborhoods.

Those 3000 working class jobs won't be situated next to the casino- unless the casino is providing housing for their workers; please tell me do you know a lot of people who are jumping at an opportunity to live next door to a casino? Or who would move downtown because we might have a casino now? That's not how the market will work.

You're not going to see a ton of residential developers jump on board in bringing their developments to downtown just because of a casino- the demographics just don't support that.

Casinos are not designed to be a "good neighbor" - they are designed to be fortresses and keep their customers until they've exhausted their money. This isn't Vegas where there's already a substantial base of entertainment options and competitors (other casinos) -the legislation is only allowing one casino in our region.....they might market themselves to gain support from others that they will intend to incentive their customers to patronize the existing business but let's be real that's not the reality here. They're end-goal is to keep you trapped inside.

Atlanta3000 The Gulch is a 117 acre f'en asphalt whole. Anything there would be a "good neighbor".

Atlanta3000 Really???
Casinos are open 24/7/365 and will employee 3000 people. How many people does the GA Dome employee? How many events on a yearly basis?

The bottom line is having a casino Downtown will not disrupt the matrix of urban development. The Gulch is a already and will always be in a fragmented area of Downtown. Not to mention, Downtown is full of parking lots just begging for residential buildings.

Like I said just having a casino and a hotel will not total the $2 billion investment that they have to have. It wouldnt even be over $1 billion for a hotel and a casino

The commission would issue up to two licenses. One in the Atlanta license would require an investment of $2 billion, and a secondary state license for elsewhere in Georgia would need at least a $450 million investment.
I know a city with $200 million ready to be invested.

The Dome and GWCC ARE a problem. They ARE creating super blocks and have massive stretches of blank walls.

The museums are a bit better, in that they're smaller, and are broken up with park and public space that lessens the impact.

By this logic we should just put a toxic waste dump there, since "anything" would be a better alternative.

The gulch should be reserved for the MMPT. Period. That, and the associated developments, will employ MANY more people, produce much more tax revenue, and produce much more foot-traffic for local stores than any casino could.
