I think the conversation segued into this when someone said Atlantic Station was declining because there were too many "Section 8 types" hanging around there. Then somebody else spoke up and said they were a Section 8 recipient and were tired of being stereotyped. That lead to the discussion about the pros and cons of welfare payments.

Granted sometimes (seems like weekend nights) it does get a little "ghetto", but for the most part during the day (all week long) there is a good mix of all kinds of people there and the stores/restaurants seem to be doing well. And these "ghetto/Section 8/whatever people" are not buying the condos or renting the apartments in the area. They are getting in their CARS and driving there.

Anyways, whoever bought it plans to invest in it (I believe bringing in stores that don't exist in the metro area and put more of a focus on the shopping).

Incorrect. It costs $25,000.00 to maintain a prisoner in jail for 20 years. Prisons are run by corporations. More prisoners more profit. Read Freakonomics. It will give you an entire new perspective on conventional wisdom.

No, and it's pretty lame of them to try.
