Thanks everyone. I'm so impressed with all the great information everyone passes along on this forum. I especially appreciate the link to the Atlanta public school map and the commuting info.

We are probably going to rent for our first six months so we can take some time to really check out all of these neighborhoods, as well as the schools. When I keep on hearing the same places over and over -- VA highland, Morningside, Inman Park, Candler Park, etc. -- it's seems like we're going to have a couple places to choose from. Nice!

Renting for 6 months is always a good idea. We started out doing that only we bought a house 3 months into it. But it certainly does give you a feel for things. I'd wish you luck but I think you don't need it so I will just welcome and have fun figuring out where you want to live!

I live in Decatur, and everyone has it exactly right. I really have nothing to add. Va High, Morningside, Candler, Lake Claire or Decatur are top notch choices for what you are looking for. You'd probably be equally happy in any one of these areas. Inman Park is great too, but when we lived there a few years ago, there weren't really as many kids as you see in the other choices. That may have changed in recent years though. If you choose Decatur, you need to make sure you are in the city limits b/c they have an independent school system that is separate from DeKalb County. There are good schools in DeKalb .... but there are also struggling schools.

Are you going to be in the market for day care or a mom's morning out/preschool?

To Frances125 -

Yep, once we figure out where we'll be located, we'll need to consider daycare/pre-schools etc. as the little one will be about 18 months then. That will also factor into our decision....if you have any good recs, please PM me :-)

There are fabulous daycares in this area. The few that come to mind off the top of my head include:
Frasier School, Clifton School, Bright Horizons (Ga Tech and Peachtree Presbyterian), Children's School, Suzuki School. If I think of more I'll add them to the list. Be sure to check out BrightFromtheStart.org which lists all of the accredited center and home daycares in the metro area.

However, to enroll your child in the Clifton School one parent has to be an employee of Emory, CDC, CHOA, and I think American Heart Association. This may have changed since my son went there 5 years ago.

We've had a fantastic experience at Springdale Park. They were a platinum award winner in the Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS).

Tell us more. Thought Springdale Park was a new school that pulled good students from Morningside and Mary Lin?

To me this statement is nothing more than a 'drive-by' to posters looking for information. If you are going to bother posting at all, kindly explain your position.
