Well, if you are trying to get into the harder schools within UT and A&M, the top 10% (8% at UT) is irrelevant. I am currently a senior in high school and knew going in that I would be accepted to UT and A&M (I am top 1%). What I am unsure of is whether or not I will get into their engineering schools. Those schools don't auto-admit.

My family and I knew before I started at LT the reputation that the high school had for the academic rigor and competitiveness at the top. I considered myself a bright student, but I knew that I wasn't going to be automatically admitted into UT or A&M. With that being said, my parents were not going to sacrifice my high school career by going to a much easier school (and being automatically admitted to UT/A&M). Therefore, I applied to out of state schools like OU and LSU. Thankfully, out of state tuition wasn't really a problem for my family.
