Texas in general is just HOT. Period. All those "feels better", "more comfortable" claims is just ridiculous talk. Hot is Hot. I sweated just as much walking in Las Vegas as I did walking the Kemah boardwalk in Houston.
Austin is hot,
Houston is hot AND feels like the inside of a dog's mouth.

That's the difference.

That's your opinion. Or did you get that from Tom Wolfe too?

Austin = higher temperatures, less humidity, less cloud cover (sun beating down on you all day long)
Houston = lower temperatures, more humidity, more cloud cover and rain

What again, is the usual summer heat index in each? Hint -- very similar.

Like I said, it's a wash.

Don't let the lack of water in Austin trick you into believing we don't have cottonmouths (water moccasins).

It's not opinion, it's fact. Tom Wolfe just happens to be a very articulate guy.

You seem to have a problem distinguishing bad from worse.

Texas in general is just HOT. Period. All those "feels better", "more comfortable" claims is just preference. Hot is Hot. I sweated just as much walking in Las Vegas, NV as I did walking the Kemah boardwalk in Houston.
After drinking 9 beers the night before & staring at the flyers they hand out to pedestrians in Vegas, I definitely used to sweat as much in vegas as i might strolling on the kemah boardwalk. (but vegas isn't "africa" hot).

But you're right.... Texas is HOT. Those who are contemplating the Grapes of Wrath in reverse & move here without a visit first absolutely melt here. We peel them off of the pavement each August.

Thanks for the correction. So we have Cottonmouths, Copperheads, Coral Snakes AND Rattlesnakes in Austin. Better than a trifecta. Houston doesn't have Austin beat on our slithery friends.

How about Tornado's. Who gets more...Houston or Austin??

(Crap....I bet Dallas is gonna start bragging about that one). How far can a Copperhead fly in a F3 tornado? Do they fly further in 80% humidity or 95% humidity?

That means I can run my errands and do my thing in Austin and not sweat when I walk from a parking spot to a building or back out to my car etc... That's acceptable and tolerable to me. In Houston that is unrealistic. Like other posters have said you can see steam coming off the road and your shades get fogged up. It's atrocious. I think you're in denial about the miserable humidity... It does feel like a swamp!! Same thing with NOLA. It's called living on the gulf coast. Its nice to be a couple hours inland, so that the humidity is drastically reduced. It's not like Houston has great beaches and so you need to be close to the beach. but hey agree to disagree. You can live in denial or maybe you actually like it.... Everyone I know can't wait to get to Austin on the weekend to get a break from the swampa$$..
Not sure where you are getting the close to 100% humidity on a daily basis from. For the last couple weeks it has been in the mid 50's, low 60's. Right now it is 54%. Yes, in the mornings it is usually higher, but it doesn't last long once the sun is up. Only time I've seen steam come off of the road is when it rains...and the road is 100+ degrees and the rain is cold. That has nothing to do with it being humid. Have had my glasses maybe fog up twice all year.

I lived in Austin 7 years and have been in Houston almost 10. Generally it is more humid here, but not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be....and it is tolerable.

I have. Houston is not as hot as Austin. But it feels worse in the summer because the humidity lingers throughout the day while in Austin the humidity drops noticeably as the day progresses. Austin afternoons are hot and relatively dry. Houston afternoons are "moist."

Only in Houston have a I walked out of an air conditioned building with glasses on and had them fog up.

I have lived in both cities. This humidity argument is a lie. It's 57 percent in Houston right now while in Austin it's 47%. I will concede that at night Houston is literally 100%, but at night it doesn't really matter. By then the sun is down and it doesn't affect the temperature. Austin heat is horrible, it's like a desert here. At least it rains in Houston.

I didn't read through most of the posts but Sperling did a study on the hottest summers in the country and can pretty much settle the argument. He took into account high temps, night temps, and dew points (humidity) to get a heat index for the summer.

Houston is just as humid as Florida but Austin temps are higher. Dallas takes the cake for hottest summer in Texas, but when you guys look at the list it's almost laughable.

1.) Pheonix-Mesa --------97.7
2.) Las Vegas-Paradise -- 94.4

3.) Dallas-Fort Worth --- 92.4
4.) Houston-Sugarland -- 92.3
5.) Austin-Round Rock -- 92.2
6.) San Antonio ---------92.1

Houston has the lowest daytime temps but the highest nighttime temps. The humidity can make The heat index 5-10 degrees hotter than the stated air temperature in Houston (especially at night).

"Because of the humidity, the heat in Houston feels nearly as extreme as that in Las Vegas, even though Houston has an average July high temperature over ten degrees cooler."

Just because you think it is so, doesn't make it so.

There is hardly any difference in the average Houston and Austin temperatures.

Houston ------------------------------------------------------------------Austin

Houston---------------------------------------------------------------Austin

Austin is not at all like a desert. This is a desert - Phoenix
