I vote for Las Manitas on Congress.

When I lived there, Las Manitas typified the Austin Funky-Indy vibe.

Get the migas...

I loved the Magnolia Cafe when I was there for a visit. It's on South Congress.

Yea, I like Magnolia. The other location on Lake Austin is also cool. Also check out:

Kerbey Lane...Torchy's(both of the ones on s1st are great)...Curra's Grill...Casa de Luz(vegan,macro-biotic, thai-chi, yoga, music...a totally amazing place even if you aren't a vegan....which I'm not)

Is there still a Kerbey Lane on Kerbey Lane? If so, I'd vote for going to that one.

I'd forgotten about Magnolia! Yes, that's another good "Austiny" place.

Las Manitas is great for breakfast, too.

I vote for Magnolia or Mangia Pizza. Yes, Mangia is known for Chicago style pizza, but the vibe is all Austin.

Chuy's on Barton Springs -Jenna Bush got arrested there (or at least cited) for underage drinking!

Or the Salt Lick is the best BBQ we ever had there - plus it's in a dry county so you can bring your own beer in a cooler which is really great! But you must bring cash because it doesn't take credit cards or checks.

I don't think it is a dry county, they just don't have a liquor license.

Speaking of the Salt Lick, has anyone else been to the new Mandola Winery / Trattoria Lisina just down the road? They spent some $$$ building that. Very picturesque, vineyards with hills in the background, very different from the Salt Lick. It is the closest I've ever seen in TX to some of the wineries / restaurants in Napa or Sonoma. Even though the guy is from Houston...

[quote=atxcio;3850912]I don't think it is a dry county, they just don't have a liquor license.

Well whatever the reason, you get to bring your own beer in your own cooler so you get to drink what you like and you only pay liquor store prices. And I find that makes for a rather affordable meal.

Several people told me it was a dry county and that was the reason but I never asked them to cite their sources so maybe I/they am/are wrong.

I have also been told several times it's a dry county.
