Interestingly enough the only place in Texas on the map that replicates extreme drought is Austin metro area. Even California is doing relatively well according to that map...

Austin keeps trying to brand itself as new California. That’s what it gets.

We are still 12 or 14 feet above where it was in the nadir of the last drought. We took the kids and friends out tubing yesterday and had a grand time - the water is still surprisingly refreshing despite the early season heat.

Hopefully, the El Nino model holds and we get a wet winter.

Here’s a pretty good website that gives Lake Travis water levels each month of each year going back to 1943:

https://www.golaketravis.com/waterlevel/

I well remember 1963 when it was down to 615’, but my brother & I confined our boating to Lake Austin for most of that season. (Our 15’ Glasspar with 50 outboard was a lot of fun and popular with the girls.

Back in those days it was not crowded on Lake Austin during the week, and weekends weren’t bad at all except for Memorial Day & July 4th holidays.

There was a hilarious Instagram reel I saw today by atxdrinker or something like that if him getting dressed up getting ready to get on a friend’s boat. It was so funny. Boats are still very popular.

Actually, just going to link it. It’s public, so you should just be able to see it on the website if you don’t have an Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Ct9wt...RlODBiNWFlZA==

Heheh.
The only time other guys were invited out on my boat was when we were taking our girlfriends waterskiing.
Sometimes some funny stuff happened, but once it was a big gaff on my part.
One summer midday around ‘65 or ‘66 I took my then gf Elaine to go skiing on Lake Austin. I launched the boat at Walsh Landing and had her hold the bow line at the dock while I parked the car & trailer up in the lot.
When walking back down to the dock the boat looked kind of odd and she was standing there with a bewildered look on her face.
The closer I got, It looked like the boat was sinking! Rookie mistake! I had forgotten to insert the stern drain plug before launching.
Anyway, we started bailing water as soon as I groped around in the stern putting the plug in tight. Someone nearby loaned us a couple of little buckets to get rid of the water. In short order there was enough bailed out so I could start the engine and get under way.
After clearing the dock area and going about 10 knots, she took the wheel so I could open the drain plug.
We were making enough speed so the water in the boat could drain out the stern in just a few minutes, and I could put the plug safely back in place.
Never made that mistake again. Lol
After college a few years later, Elaine wound up married to a psychiatrist at the State Hospital.
Smart lady.

Did a little experiment the other day at HEB…
Took the wife to the grocery store to pick up a handful of items in the afternoon.
She went in at 4:19.
I stayed out in the car with the windshield shades in place while the motor was running & the A/C blowing at about 60% until 4:25.
Turned the engine off and left the windows rolled up to see how long it would take to bring the sweat & discomfort.
She came out at 4:35 and I wasn’t overheating at all. Yes, it was getting warm, but not sweaty hot yet.
I figured in another five minutes the perspiration would be flowing and in another five I’d have to bail out.
Easy to see how a few kids & lots of dogs die every year in Texas during the summer months because of careless parents.
