I think Adelaide is a good compromise for those that don't want the massive metro areas of Sydney or Melbourne.
South Australia I think has a lot on offer and next time I go back I plan on spending more time exploring the state than I have in the past.
I never went to SA. I think some of the regional towns around the big metros have a lot to offer as well. Lots of towns have a fairly cosmopolitan feel to them, good restaurants and cafes etc. I lived in Tasmania for 3 months and the rest of my time in rural NSW and while I wouldn't move to another small town, I would definitely consider a town of 60,000 plus.
I am an airline pilot, currently with American Airlines…flying International on the 767. So yes, I can live just about anywhere. My wife's career is slightly more limiting with that regard…she is a English teacher (with her Ph.D in medieval studies). She's taught at the secondary and the University level.
For this move (which we hope to be our last), we want what's best for our family FIRST…then we'll tie in the jobs accordingly. So "if" we migrate to Oz (still TBD I might add…as we are just as inclined to stay in the states), I could (in time) slide over to fly for either Qantas, Air New Zealand, or Virgin Australia (who has a hub in Brisbane).
As a pilot, life is always much better if you live in the area that has the hub you fly out of…you are home a LOT more (better for family life).
FWIW, I know a few pilots and you would have infinitely easier time (both finding work and then getting work life balance) being based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane than being based in Adelaide. The Eastern seaboard corridor (SYD/MEL/BNE) is where the overwhelming majority of flights are. For reference SYD-MEL is the third busiest airport pair in the world. By comparison, Qantas has one international flight from ADL to SIN departing 3x/week.
Brisbane is nice but it's really bogan. This alone would be the #1 negative feature of Brisbane. Added to the total bogan population are hoardes of Kiwi bogans who have moved there.
Adelaide might be a better choice ....especially if they are foodies and like the countryside.
Sydney if they have heaps of money and love the harbour
Melbourne if they like a bit of European culture and want four seasons
Perth if they are beach people and don't mind more bogans plus all the nouveau riche
Tasmania if they don't mind worse weather than NZ
Interesting, Ive always associate the term bogan with a supporter of the collingwood football club. I had to google it to check the interpretation of the word, I suppose brisbane has its share of bogans living in the outer suburbs. I have occasionally heard logan city being referred to as "Bogan City" , but ive never stopped in the place
My first car was a WB kingswood V8 ute, i loved it, so i suppose im a bit bogan to.
Anyway i moved to brisbane becuase iin my opinion a better more afforable place to raise a family, with a better climate, i like the heat.

True but sing air, Malaysia, etc. have daily flights...
This is true but it's unlikely the OP will want to be flying for an airline whose hub is 7 hours away.
A long commute is never desirable, yet at times…unavoidable in this career field. Again, our primary interest is to find that place that fits our family best…the jobs will sort themselves out accordingly. Thus our desire to learn all we can about the pros and the cons of each area with regard to raising our family.

and you would be right ..
Seriously, there is bogan everywhere in Australia. Its alright. The Holden & Ford jackets identify them pretty quickly!
It would be more affordable than say Sydney or even Melbourne. Depending on finances, living in the burbs isn't too exciting (IMO)
Very well said...It's really a very nice place. My pick would be Melbourne it's people are great and lots of lovely places and faces if I may say. It's a great experience.
I enjoy the Ford/Holden rivalry and it's sometimes hard to play both sides.
"Bogans" to me are not all bad. They get a bad rap sometimes or people get classed unfairly.
the ford/holden thing is pretty amusing (to me)
I agree, bogans can be some of the nicest people you will meet....some are excessive, southern cross tattoo, "we're full" stickers etc, they make me cringe.
