LOL! You sound like my husband. He's always whinging about how "third-world" it is here when it comes to home construction.

I don't know what it is that's kept house design the way it is for so long. Sure, winters are milder in that we don't get 20 below with snow but even 5C at night makes a house turn into a fridge when all you've got is single-paned windows and uninsulated walls. Just roof insulation isn't going to do it. It helps but it's not enough. It's cheaper to build uncozy homes and maybe that's the reason - Australians have the highest rate of home ownership (or at least did a few years ago) and are really passionate and adamant about owning their own home, so it helps when building costs are lower I suppose. I dunno, that's just my theory.
I made that last comment in reference to road construction,
though I suppose it easily relates to homes as well.
If homes get cold in winter, why do so many people live in homes?
For me being able to stay warm easy is one of the main advantages to not living in a tent.

The other thing is the lack of powerpoints in houses here. I don't know what the problem with putting adequate number of those in is but it's crazy to have an entire room with one powerpoint, and sometimes it's a single. Stupid. Common feature in houses here are extension cords strung all over the place and the single powerpoints overloaded with about six extensions.
And just when I thought Oz couldn't get more "Third World."

It's just different. You have to get used to the differences.
Some things will be better, some things worse, most things pretty much the same.
It seems the only things that will be "pretty much the same"
will be "having a go at yanks" is still a popular conversation starter
and having certain levels of public healthcare.
Of course there are a few aspects of living here that I wish didn't exist like
"Golf Season," "Summer BBQ's," "Spring Thaw"
8-10 months a year where the weather would be at least a little ridiculous for watersports
(ranging from cold, too-cold, and "...What?!? You're-gonna-kill-yourself!..." cold)
and highs of -2 C being described as "cool weather" by tv weather personalities.

Spend some time driving along the Bruce highway, entering little sugar towns. Port Vila is in better nick than some of these places. And a whole lot more tidy. A lot of central and north queensland you could be forgiven thinking you were in the back blocks of PNG.

I have been up and down the Bruce in fact. Many, many parts of Canada are just as bad as this as well. Minus the palm trees.
