To be fair, OZgal, look at New Zealand (South Auckland in particular). When you fill up with large numbers of people from the third world (in this case Pacific Islands) standard of living heads in the direction of the places these people come from.
Is it nationality or poverty the cause of the issues with Manukau/So Auckland? Then again you have many examples of white areas that have low standards of living? Ever driven through small towns in appalachia? You would think you were in So Auckland except with white faces. IMO, I think its poverty and education, not color of skin or immigrant status. Maoris have lower incomes than white kiwis.. yet arrived prior to the pakeha.

We have lower incomes ? could you do me a favour and ask the IRD why I am being clobbered with both company and personal tax demands with threats ?

I think the problem with some of the bad neighborhoods is NZ's easy going welfare programs.
I understand some people get laid off or suffer injury and they are down on their luck and need a little help from the taxpayers.
But in NZ, like some other countries mine included, the welfare system doesn't reward work or getting off welfare and instead a permanent welfare class is created. You end up with people with no incentive to move forward and build good lives and since people are sitting around all day with nothing to do and nothing to look forward to, they get in trouble with drink and drugs and then crime.
It isn't poverty itself as plenty of people in poverty or low incomes have busy productive happy lives.

Then it must be "dignity" or "self-respect" or lack thereof.

Check the DOL website. do a google. Its all available for you online.. I've posted links in other threads for you. Maoris have lower incomes and higher unemployment rates. Also their rates of incarceration is higher. As for the IRD, no need to be obtuse, the IRD clobbers anyone for taxes, regardless of colour... someone has to pay for welfare, to care of inmates, build roads, etc. etc.
O I do apologise in advance, but when I saw this title it was just the perfect time for this old and probably now well worn joke.
Whats the difference between Australia and a Yogurt?
If you stick a Yogurt in the desert for 200 years, it will develop a culture.
Sorry Australia, I do love your country, please let me back in after that.
