Professional Valet at the start and end of the summer (maybe in the middle if needed) and a hosepipe, a sponge, a chamois, car shampoo and a bucket when they get dirty the rest of the year, usually bi-weekly.

Twice a year, whether it needs it or not. No use doing it more. It rains here October-June, so I wash it in early July and again in September, when it also gets a good wax.
There are the two that are in good condition and get washed frequently, would say once a month. Wash it by hand myself and hand wax every other wash. They are darker colors and we have hard water, so have to wax frequently, otherwise water spots show.
Then there is the beat-up minivan my wife drives mostly. The paint has peeled off on the roof and the hood. Gets parked outside. Goes to the car-wash and vacuum with a $3.99 coupon probably twice a year.

I'm extremely particular about two of my cars, so I hand wash once a week or once every two weeks, depending on how much each was driven. Two of my cars have never been through a machine wash--ever. I pay for hand washes occasionally but usually wash each myself instead. The third car I'm not that worried about so I'll run it through the machine wash, but with no particular regularity, more or less just when I think it needs it.
My truck is 17 years old and it gets washed when it rains.....

If you wash them, they just don't feel appreciated.. my Defender looks much happier after a dirty weekend.
