Ford launches car that prevents you from speeding - CNET

Insurance companies will love this. Wonder how long before they try putting this tech in their other vehicles? I think it would be a good selling point for fleet vehicles.

Speeding (within reason) is not the problem. Inattentive driving is. Ford needs to build a car that slaps you in the face if you pickup your cell phone.

Cars have become nothing more than a telephone box on wheels.

They already have limiters in place on most cars these days anyway. SOme are higher limits then others though. This is just the next step to lower those limits.

I do agree that the fleet vehicles would love this, as well as insurance companies. Most people buying a personal car probably not.

How about a car that won't let you turn the steering wheel unless you turn on your turn signals

Local governments will lobby to kill this tech for fear it will destroy their revenue source! No more speeding ticket money!!

Although I wonder if the tech really needs a camera to read road signs. My GPS is already programmed with speed limits. The car could know the speed limit through it's own GPS.

Why would you want to signal the enemy as to your intentions?

Road construction areas will temporarily lower the posted speed limit. GPS won't always be up to date on such things.

Speed limit sign recognition has already been implemented and it would be a relatively easy software patch to integrate it into a fully adaptable cruise control system (if already so equipped). Seems like a decent idea to me as long as you can override it at your discretion.
