Used cars are expensive these days! I have an opportunity to buy a decade-old Pontiac Grand Am with only 75,000 miles for 2500. It runs good, body is fine, etc Safety ratings and crash test ratings are not so great but I'm not sure they were on most vehicles at that time. I drive a lot of highway miles. Does this sound like a good deal or am I crazy to even be considering it?

I don't think I've ever even looked at safety ratings when I buy a car.

One of my cars doesn't even have airbags and has rear lap seat belts.

Just bought a 2004 Chevy Cavalier Ecotec/5 speed for $1500 - checked the safety ratings after the purchase, and they're not so good, but oh well.

Some of my other cars have no airbags or seatbelts.

If you don't have a lot of money buy the best car you can afford, it is all you can do!

Safety ratings are the least of my concerns when shopping for a vehicle.

No I wouldn't. Honestly, I wouldn't even drive a car without side curtain airbags, unless it was something that happened infrequently.

What are low safety ratings in this scenario? I certainly would not buy a car that drastically increases my chances of death or serious injury in an accident when compared to the average car regardless of how cheap it is. These days there really is no excuse for the absence of seat belts, front and side impact air bags along with a well designed crash structure with crumple zones. These are bare minimums really.

Add in another person who has Never checked "vehicle safety" ratings.

I'm of the opinion (decades as a motorcyclist) that those who shop for "I'll be safe in a crash" tend to be less attentive and Expect a crash.

As for the car, if it checks out with a mechanics per-purchase inspection and is the best you can afford, go for it.
