How about cars on jack stands and suspension parts scattered on the ground?

I am actually mindful of esthetics. Cars with the hood up and tools scattered around is an eyesore. I don't want to subject my neighbors to that. I do what I have to do in the garage.

What exactly is an "eyesore" about it and why exactly are you bothered by someone doing some work on their car? Especially if it's just a temporary weekend project? I find ugly people to be more of an eyesore but do I go around telling ugly people to cover their faces or go back inside so I don't have to look at them? No, it would be as rude as some of you are being.

I don't understand how people don't like to do work on their vehicles. I know how to change my oil and it takes a lot less time for me to do it then to drive to the shop wait for an hour and than drive home.
I married a former mechanic and I was shocked at what he told me people came in for, they couldn't change a tire, they couldn't find where their air filter was, they didn't even know how to change their windshield wiper fluid.
I think for a lot of people if they knew how to do it they would open up there hoods, but a large majority of people find it easier to take it to a shop, which I don't blame them, it can be easier, and it keeps shops in business.

I am probably the only person IN my neighborhood that you'll see with his hood open on all my cars.

Seriously, nobody today knows how to change or replace the simplist of things on a car, let alone how to check the damn oil!. I had one guy ask me at work that he needed to add oil to his car and I was like "Well, did you check the oil dipstick to see if it was low"? And the expression on his face was sorta like this but a little less of the bulging eyes.

The reason why he asked me was because his oil indicator said that the oil life was at 5%. So he thought it was low.

This was a full grown adult man in his 40's, I mean come on! As a man, and being that age, you should at least know how to check the freaking oil.

Some people are really stupid when it comes to the absolute basic automotive knowledge. They assume and treat the car as if they don't have to do anything to it but just drive until the wheels fall off. Then when something breaks or fails, they blame the manufacture.

Preventive maintenance is the easiest and most cost effective way that anyone can protect their car from future wear and tear. Even replacing items that are still somewhat functional with new parts, will add extra life into the vehicle.

But back to seeing hoods being popped up. It's a rarity to be honest to see anybody checking their cars out these days. I guess many people have the confidence and assume that a new car will not break down and that there's no need to inspect anything because the car will let you know if something isn't working right.

The problem is, when something does decide to crap out, the price is usually very expensive. I mean, there's times that I wish new cars still used spark plug wires, since the price for one coil-on-plug can cost $200 or more, vs a set of wires which are only like $30 depending on the brand and application.

Complicated and complex high end suspension systems is another example.

I love the ease and simplicity of older cars, parts are usually cheaper, and you can actually service it yourself if you wanted to. I'm just the type of person that likes my cars to run well, look good, and if something isn't right, I tend to fix it right away. Never wait until it's too late.

So fellas, pop that hood open every once in awhile ok!!

Two houses down is a de facto Volkswagen repair shop. They bought their house right after I did and theirs had a garage bigger than the house. I assume that's how they make money.
