There was some rule long ago that half the fasteners on US cars had to be metric by a certain date. I had a car where the valve covers had every other bold metric and SAE. I do not know whether some idiot took the half thing literally, or they were trying to make a statement. It was stupid.
When I work on a car, I usually use metric and SAE sizes interchangeably anyway. Can't find a 1/2" socket? Just use 13 MM. It is close enough 99% of the time. Sometimes with an old rusty bolt the metric equivalent will fit and hold where the proper SAE size will not.
What really drives me nuts are screws. Some are Phillips #2 some are the other Phillips, some are slotted, some are hex and some are torx. Then of course you have all kinds of different sizes for each.
